The Story
Escher Media’s roots run incredibly deep in the UK underground music scene. Leveraging founder James Hills' own background as a Drum & Bass DJ, we had authentic, ground-level access to the culture. This culminated in producing Battle of the MCs, the scene's first fully interactive, majorly distributed DVD, published by TDK. It was a massive undertaking featuring interviews, event coverage, and performances from almost every major MC in the industry, ultimately spawning two successful sequels.
Beyond being a physical release milestone, the Battle of the MCs shoots inadvertently captured early internet history, including the legendary 'Beefy and Taz' viral clips. More importantly, this project solidified a massive network of artists right on the cusp of the digital video boom. As the underground industry realized the necessity of music videos, we naturally became a go-to production house for the scene.
Starting with a major video shoot for UK Apache ("Gimme da Girl"), our portfolio rapidly expanded across the D&B, live music and Reggae scenes. Over the years, we have produced bespoke visual content for a massive roster of underground heavyweights, including MC Navigator, Skibadee, Shabba D, Harry Shotta, Eksman, Fatman D, DJ Phantasy, and MC Dynamite, as well as reggae and dub acts like Charlie P, The Dubateers, and Conscious Sounds.
